February is the start of the year-long NARFE Centennial Celebration! The National Association of Retired Civil Employees (NARCE) was founded in February 1921 by 14 federal employees. It was a delayed result of the Pendleton Act of 1883 which ended the spoils system for government jobs and formed the Civil Service Commission to oversee a the merit-based hiring of federal employees. The first federal service benefit was a retirement annuity of $720 per year.
While the Civil Service Commission was dissolved in 1978, replaced by the Office of Personnel Management. The NARCE lived on, later morphing into the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). NARFE successfully advocated for annual pension increases (1926); retirement eligibility requirements (1940-60's); federal health care benefits (1959); Cost of Living Adjustments (1962); survivor benefits; and many more annuitant and survivor benefits. Over the decades, NARFE expanded its focus to include active federal employees and worked with Congress to
Many bills that expired with the end of the 116th Congress (1/3/21) will need to be reintroduced in the 117th Congress. In June, NARFE will be on Capitol Hill to advocate for passage of Postal Reform, repeal of the WEP/GPO provisions, and advocate for other improvements to federal annuities. NARFE represents YOU in Congress, but it can’t do it alone! Tell your federal colleagues and friends to JOIN NARFE and protect our federal pay and benefits. In February, NARFE will provide a status update regarding the Centennial Gala Celebration and LEGcon21. |
Let's take the time, during this Centennial Celebration year, to remind our families and neighbors that feds provide valuable services to the communities where they live and to the Nation as a whole.
Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and/or any senior media in your area. Tell your community about NARFE and how it goes toe-to-toe with Congress to advocate for those who serve the public. We are proud to have served the Nation and to be members of an organization devoted to promoting public service and preserving federal benefits. Happy 100th Anniversary, NARFE! |
