Long-term Care Insurance
I want to put in a plug here for a benefit federal employees and retirees have that many of us have either forgotten or are unaware of, that is the ability for our family members to enroll in Long-term Care insurance. Your children and grandchildren can enroll in this program. The retiree must be living for family members to apply. This benefit has been on my mind for several months, after learning that the state of Washington has now added a WaCares Fund.
This is actually a payroll tax with collected dollars going into a fund for long-term care payments.
Employees who have purchased long-term care had until November 1st to apply for an exemption from this tax. The amount of the payroll tax is a percentage of your earnings. All long-term care providers were overwhelmed with applications from Washington State and actually shut down sales to Washington residents. The Federal program is still taking applications and processing applications with a warning that processing will not be completed by the November 1st deadline. Governor Inslee, is under tremendous pressure to extent that date due to the fact that sales for the state were shut down. Who knows where the deadline will end up? There are many advantages to purchasing a long-term care product from the marketplace including the federal program.
Just a reminder of one of the benefits we enjoy due to the ongoing efforts of NARFE to retain Benefits.
